Unraveling
Emotional abandonment comes in many forms. I was never left alone in a basket at a fire station door, mind you. But to a young child, small unintentional things can feel like abandonment.
Abandoned buildings are abundant in southern states, ranging from gas stations to shopping malls. Sadly, in some areas the dilapidated structures seem to be more prevalent than occupied buildings.
By combining self portraits with abandoned buildings, I look at what abandonment means to me as well as making images that are deeply personal. Most of these buildings are wreckage. And yet, letting my mind and body settle into a forgotten place is part of the process of remembering the memories that are less than ideal. And yet, there is a kind of peace in unraveling the past and being willing to look at all that is there.
